She holds a Principal Fellowship herself, and her career in Higher Education has spanned academic, professional and freelance roles. She has particular interests in internationalised, inclusive curricula, and in the evidencing, recognition, and reward of learning, teaching and leadership achievements in higher education. Marita has led and contributed to projects institutionally, nationally, and internationally and formerly ran the Staff and Educational Development Association’s (SEDA) Fellowships scheme. In addition to her current role, her co-authored book Evidencing Teaching Achievements was published by Critical Publishing in 2024.

Event Overview
This presentation will discuss a series of systematic literature reviews related to research with international students. We will highlight evidence-based practices which support meaningful internationalisation which makes a demonstrable impact on students. In doing so, we will also discuss significant limitations in existing evidence which impact teaching and learning practices. The session will end with a discussion of current practices and whether or how these might be reconsidered or reshaped through reflection on existing evidence.
Presenters
Dr Sylvie Lomer (https://research.manchester.ac.uk/en/persons/sylvie.lomer) is a Senior Lecturer in Education at the Manchester Institute of Education, University of Manchester, UK. She specializes in policy and higher education studies within the MA Education (International) program. Her research takes a comparative approach to global developments in higher education, focusing on UK policies concerning international students. Through a critical lens, she examines public policy discourses to understand how international students are represented. Her future work will explore how institutions and individuals engage with, respond to, and challenge these representations, providing meaningful insights into global education policy and the complexities of international student experiences.
Dr Jenna Mittelmeier (https://research.manchester.ac.uk/en/persons/jenna.mittelmeier) is a Senior Lecturer in International Education at the Manchester Institute of Education, University of Manchester, UK. She researches the internationalization of higher education, focusing on international students' experiences and treatment. She adopts a critical perspective, challenging deficit narratives about international students and addressing issues of power, privilege, and ethics in intercultural classrooms. With an interdisciplinary approach spanning education, sociology, and human geography, her interests include the impact of internationalization, interculturally inclusive curricula, and structural inequalities affecting international students and migrant groups. Jenna co-founded and leads the Research with International Students (RIS) network, fostering collaboration among scholars in this field.
Sylvie and Jenna recently co-edited the open-access book Research with International Students: Critical Conceptual and Methodological Considerations (Mittelmeier, J., Lomer, S., & Unkule, K., 2024, Routledge). They also co-host the Research with International Students website, which features a regularly updated repository of methodological resources to support research practices involving international students.

Elizabth is the founder of the Mainstreaming Impact in International Business (MIIB) initiative. At Leeds she is currently the Programme Director for the MSc Global Business. Her research focuses on in enterprise, place, space, and governance, and especially on how stakeholders may harness the benefits of their interactions to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Prof Margaret Fletcher (https://www.linkedin.com/in/margaret-fletcher-b7807613/) is a Professor of International Business at University of Glasgow, UK. She has been a member of the School’s Senior Leadership Team. Margaret is the AIB Teaching Education Co-Chair for Teaching Innovation.
