Re-visiting SME and MNE Internationalisation in an era of paradox


1. Salman Ahmad (University of Glasgow), Thesis title: Managing resource dependencies to overcome internationalisation constraints - A perspective of low power firms

Salman Ahmad is a Lecturer in Business and Management at University of Derby and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). His research broadly focuses on international business, entrepreneurial organisations, interfirm cooperation, resource dependency management, strategy, institutions and global challenges. He has recently completed his doctoral studies at the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow and received the Adam Smith Business School Prize for PhD Excellence (2019). He presented the paper ‘managing resource dependencies to achieve the balance of power: a perspective of low power firms in an inter-organisational relationship’ at 44th European International Business Academy’s Conference 2018 and secured the Best Paper Award in the Networking and Relationship Track.
Before joining the academia, he has worked for different organisations in the development sector to promote entrepreneurship, and the success of his work received global appreciation in the form of several accolades including an award from Queen Elizabeth II.

2. Riika Harikkala-Lahihinen (University of Turku), Thesis title: The power of positivity - How employee emotions and interaction can benefit cross-border acquisitions

 Dr. Riikka Harikkala-Laihinen is a Postdoctoral Researcher in International Business at the University of Turku, Finland, and a Visiting Researcher at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom. She defended her doctoral thesis ‘The power of positivity: How employee emotions and interaction can benefit cross-border acquisitions’ in September 2019.
​In her thesis, she explored how cognitive appraisal theory could be used to explain and influence employee reactions during post-acquisition integration. Her areas of expertise include emotions in organizations, cross-border acquisitions and cross-cultural management. Her current work centers on the influence of employee emotions at work more broadly and rejuvenating cross-cultural theory. She has published in Cross Cultural and Strategic Management and the Research on Emotions in Organizations book series. She has also coedited a volume on socio-cultural integration in the Nordic countries for Palgrave-Macmillan.

3. Joey Soehardjojo (University of Warwick), Thesis title: Knowledge and HRM practice transfer in emerging economies -The case of Japanese joint ventures in Indonesia

Dr Soehardjojo holds a PhD from Warwick Business School, UK. He is one of the selected seven ESRC postdoctoral fellows, Wales DTP.His main research area of focus is the diffusion processes and implications of MNC (covering tier 1, 2 and 3 automotive global supply chains) cross-border management practices and policy development in the emerging market economies of Southeast Asia.
While pursuing his doctorate, Dr Soehardjojo conducted over 130 interviews with representatives of quasi-government agencies, advocates of sustainable development, business associations—and with various policymakers and formerly imprisoned union leaders.
Through a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) research grant and international research collaboration, he recently completed eight months of fieldwork covering Japan, China, Thailand, Myanmar, and Indonesia.
Building on his doctoral thesis and JSPS postdoc studies, Dr Soehardjojo is undertaking research at ESRC. The ESRC research project consolidates his doctoral and JSPS studies while developing new insights into the impacts of tripartite arrangements among quasi-government agencies, business associations and research institutions at the meso-institutional level.
Using his cross-cultural sensitivity and certified language interpreter skills, Dr Soehardjojo has provided pro bono language interpreter/translator community service since 2004, assisting migrant/domestic workers, refugee claimants and human trafficking victims in the USA, Canada, EU, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.
